Concerned about student success and retention? Of course… we all are! As instructors in a traditional classroom, we know which students participate, who seems to follow our lectures, who attends regularly, and we notice when someone starts to fall behind. With online and hybrid courses, we have to find other ways to keep up and stay connected with our students. Rather than spending hours checking student logins and page visits, creating spreadsheets to track submissions, and worrying about students whose grades are slipping, take a look at Dropout Detective!
Dropout Detective is available in Canvas now, and is currently tracking student performance in your online and hybrid courses. Access this tool via Course Navigation (left margin) within your Canvas course. The goal of Dropout Detective is to give you the data you need to quickly and consistently identify at-risk students and allow you to intervene to increase retention and student success.
Dropout Detective color codes and ranks students based on their performance, shows you their most recent access and submission dates, and provides you with their contact information – all within a few clicks. Not only will you see a risk index score for each student at that moment in time, you can look at an individual student’s performance for the last 30 days. There is also a place for you to make notes, for example, about contact you have initiated, conversations you have had with the student, arrangements you have made for makeup work if they have been ill, etc.
Information about Dropout Detective is available in your Introduction to Canvas course in the Courses & Groups drop down menu, and additional workshops are coming soon. Dropout Detective documentation is also available in the Faculty Group in Canvas.
